The global pandemic took away opportunities for our students to engage in outdoor physical activity. The students, who were already struggling to express their thoughts and emotions, lost one more coping strategy. The Spalding Zi/O TF Indoor-Outdoor Basketballs, Champion Sports Extreme Series Soccer Balls, and Skipping Rope Long Jump Rope with Wooden Handle for Kids will create outdoor physical play opportunities to engage in friendship building while learning how to “play by the rules” and be fair to their peers. Laughter and enjoyment of each other's company is the goal of our classroom community. During our scheduled “Brain Breaks” within the classroom, use of the NERF Nerfoop and GoSports Strong Skin Foam Balls will help students release stress in order to cope with the effects created by the on-going pandemic that created learning gaps. Providing this structured play time creates a learning environment that is safe and productive. The use of the Hasbro Board games (Scrabble, Battleship, and Sorry), Point Games Checkers Board for Kids and Connect 4 Strategy Board Game gives students authentic conversation practice (1.ME.5.2) in our classroom. These games will create interactions as well as problem solving opportunities each day. Creation of an inclusive, safe, classroom environment will deter self-harm(1.ME.5.2)by building problem solving thinkers using positive social/emotional strategies to gain valuable friendships.
