Reading and doing an in-depth study of a novel in the classroom is a very intimate experience for students. They come to love and identify with the protagonists and the protagonists family, friends and surroundings. When each student has their own copy of the book that they can keep and see as all theirs it adds to the experience. They now own their own books which often become their most prized possession. Sharing a novel together is also like creating your very own time capsule and these shared readings store all of their friends, their teachers and themselves in that time capsule as they process and relate to everything the protagonists experience and ultimately overcome. I remember a male student telling me after we finished "Elijah of Buxton" how he often sits in his bed at home and starts and flips through his copy of the book over and over again--his copy with everyone one of his classmates signatures in it. This was a student who previously hated to read.
