When it comes to my art teaching, I want to help kids develop skills that work beyond their mediums. Clay is a great resource for that. We all remember spending time in our classrooms as young children crafting with Play-doh (most of us still remember the taste! Lol). But when we grow up, many of us stop building with our hands. According to a 2017 study released in the Journal of Affective Disorders, working with clay has a bounty of psychological benefits, including "releasing energy and tension, providing and channeling sensation, evoking emotion, and regulating emotion through the creation of form." And I can vouch for that with my own students-- we started with only fifty pounds of clay, split between one hundred and fifty students. Suddenly, students who were normally distracted were engaging and participating at levels I hadn't seen before. So let's keep the ball rolling on that, and help my students engage and heal through art!
