This year's theme for Nevada Reading week is Catch the Reading Wave. This project is designed to support learning by providing hands-on activities. It is intended that this engaging project will address the lost learning from the pandemic by getting students curious and engaged with the world around them while providing quality, rigorous challenges. Students will build a model of a beach and experiment with different materials to understand the effect of headlands on how beaches are formed. This activity will lead directly to a discussion of how humans can use engineering to shape the environment around them to live. Other materials include a ripple table and power supply that will allow for students to experiment with actual waves in a controlled scientific environment using lab equipment. Students will also have access to the wave demonstration kits to observe and analyze the shape and behavior of waves. This project also includes several picture books on the topics of waves and oceans. These books will be used as read-aloud books for reading week. Living in the desert, many of my students have never truly experienced waves or the ocean. Through this project, it is intended to not only teach the standards but also give my students experiences that they have little to no experience with. SCIENCE 4-PS4-1. Develop a model of waves to describe patterns in terms of amplitude and wavelength and that waves can cause objects to move. 2-ESS2-1. Compare multiple solutions designed to slow or prevent wind or water from changing the shape of the land ELA W.3.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from print and digital sources; take brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories.
