I am a guitar instructor at a Title I middle school in North Las Vegas. My program has 160 students after COVID-19. My students represent a variety of levels from beginners to advanced, and a "rainbow" of diversity within ethnic and socioeconomic groups. A music elective can be the exact connection to make school relevant for many students, and the ukulele is an accessible, portable instrument that allows for inter student connection, inclusion of culture, and accompaniment. My project is to host a weekly club after school including students of all musical levels, with 30 ukuleles, as well as those students who own a ukulele. Further plans during the year will be to participate in AAPI (Asian American/Pacific Islander) Month in April with a live and pre-recorded performance to share with the school community, and to involve the ukulele students in our Spring Guitar Concerts in May. Standards included below are: MU:Pr4.8.5 Identity how cultural and historical context inform performances and result in different musical effects. MU: Cr3.8.3 Present the final version of their documented personal composition, song, or arrangement, using craftsmanship and originality to demonstrate the application of compositional techniques for creating unity and variety, tension and release, and balance to convey expressive intent. MU:Re8.8.1 Support personal interpretation of contrasting programs of music and explain how creators' or performers' apply the elements of music and expressive qualities, within genres, cultures, and historical periods to convey expressive intent.
