Many of my students are considered non-verbal and begin to attend school for the very first time. These diverse learners need to experience a highly structured learning environment where they are safe and can make meaningful connections. The sensory room at our elementary school is a calm environment for the students from PreK to 5th grade who need a momentary sensory break in their day. The students are able to go to our sensory/motor room to learn in a calm environment that meets their sensory needs. The students will be able to use the liquid floor tiles to work on the alphabet tracing using gross motor skills. The students will be able to use the color changing light center when singing and dancing to academic songs. The tactile sensory letters will be used at a light table to build letter recognition and word building. The calm cuddle ball will allow for students to work towards learning decompression skills when elevated behaviors are occurring. The ocean water mat and mystery box will allow for students who have CVI to work on tracking skills. The students will be able to use the sensory sand to write letters and numbers using fine motor skills. The sensory beads will allow for students to take breaks between their academic activities. All of these materials will allow for the students to have the ability to learn in a sensory friendly environment.
