My high school students are emergent readers. They are learning to read environmental print so that they may independently engage in meaningful work and social activities in our community. We use communication boards in our classroom to master environmental print. For example, we would use a communication board with common signs on it to teach students to recognize words like stop, do not cross, cross, do not enter, hard hat area, emergency exit, fire escape, etc., so that students learn to successfully navigate the world around them. Students will use the color printer to create custom communication boards which they will use to master reading important environmental print. Learning to identify which signs they need to learn and creating a way to learn them will give them agency and skills that they will use their entire lives. This color printer will enable them to take charge of their learning and their communication; building confidence, independence, and knowledge. Please consider helping them gain access to this incredible resource.
