As a first-year teacher, I was unable to purchase everything that I wanted for my classroom. Flexible seating and nonfiction books are at the top of my wishlist. Research has shown that children learn best when they are comfortable, and they love flexible seating for that comfort. Children also long for nonfiction books when they are book-shopping, a fact that I did not realize when I was gathering this library from thrift stores and yard sales! In these two aspects, my classroom is sorely lacking! Flexible seating such as a carpet, cushions, etc. would give learners of all levels and backgrounds an advantage in their learning. Imagine a classroom where all students are engaged in their reading, sitting quietly around the classroom on seating that they choose themselves, to fit their personal needs. At the end of the day, I simply want to create a classroom where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and appreciated. I feel that I can do that by adding a level of comfort with a carpet and flexible seating, math posters for the wall, and new nonfiction books in the library.
