These books offer several perspectives on life. Each book contains multiple life lessons the students can learn which will help them deal with so much life has already thrown at them at such an early age. Many of these students need to know that love and family exist. They need to know others have overcome; some have overcome worse circumstances. The people in these novels have gone on to live a good life. One example is the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel. He survived work camps and death camps during the Holocaust. He has gone on to have a positive impact on millions of people. Wiesel will teach the students that even in the fact of hatred and death, love and faith is what helps one to survive. Many of my students are just trying to survive and need hope.
