This year was a major adjustment to my 7th graders: although they are 7th graders, this is essentially their first year of middle school. This is also the first year in our district where the majority of learning is online rather than on paper (the district/school decided to keep the online model after quarantine). This means I have to get my students used to being physically in a classroom again AND get them acclimated to a middle school environment for the first time. Working from home allowed students to work in a way that works for them, and that way was rarely a desk. They worked laying or sitting on the floor, kneeling at a coffee table, standing or sitting a kitchen bar, propped up in their beds, or even in their yards! I can't recreate the last one, but my hope is to help give students options so that they can decide how they will be most productive. My students really need help transitioning to the classroom full-time, but I also want to keep some of the comfort and autonomy of distance education in their new learning space. Another thing is online learning has conditioned my students to believe online= short and easy. They need meaningful learning opportunities that open them up to texts and tasks that challenge them. I have added some books that are on grade level and (in my opinion) incredibly enthralling and entertaining. These are actually books I enjoyed reading when I was my students' age, and I hope that having this literature available to read will help me connect with my students and learn more about their literary interests, as well as aid with their fluency, stamina engagement, and overall interest in reading.
