After almost two years of uncertainty in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of our students continue to struggle with self-regulation as they adjust to the structure of a regular school day while enduring difficult circumstances. We knew we needed a space, a "Calm Corner" to help students self-regulate! We have a dedicated space for these students, but now we need your help with the necessary resources! Students are learning about zones of regulation, and will use the calm corner to practice self-regulation skills by doing breathing exercises, or engaging in sensory activities or play therapy techniques so that they can verbalize and regain control over their emotions. The couch and beanbag chair allows students to have comfortable seating and recognize that the Calm Corner is a space where they can be their authentic selves as they learn positive coping mechanisms. Sensory items and activities like Play-Doh are proven methods to help students move from an emotionally activated state to a state of self-regulation and readiness to learn, and dollhouses and dolls are a cornerstone resource in play therapy techniques, helping students learn strategies for managing conflicts.
