I'm an occupational therapist and my students with special needs have a great range of cognitive, social/emotional, gross motor, fine motor and visual skills. After so long learning at home and away from peer models and hands on activities, most are coming back with further delays in their ability to play, create and manipulate academic materials. The isolation from the world due to COVID-19 has really made it hard for my students with disabilities to leave the comfort of their homes and transition back to the main classroom. All the activities I have chosen are the perfect fit for my kids with Down's Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD, and Learning Disabilities. What makes OT so much fun is that the kids think they're playing a game but really we are working on neurodevelopment, and increasing independence in everyday skills using fun and exciting ways! These sensory, fine motor, and social/emotional play items will allow the students to strengthen their muscles and neuropathways in their bodies to help them to be ready to learn in the main classroom. After over a year of learning through a 2D screen, these items will allow my students to continue to learn how to create and enjoy learning through the wonderful world of play!
