“Exer-gaming” the MSA Way. Physical Education has been limited to the realm of gyms and playing fields with few technological influences. We want to be one of the growing number of schools that are implementing the phenomenon known as “exer-gaming”, which is where students use video games while exercising. The players of these games mimic the movements on the screen requiring continuous movement. The Wii gaming system gives teachers a great motivational vehicle for teaching about healthy lifestyles and consistent physical activity patterns. For years, video games have been considered part of the obesity problem for kids; however, these new active gaming systems, especially Wii, can get kids moving around and actually exercising. The Wii Fit Plus game offers four types of fitness training: aerobics, strength training, yoga, and balance games. Most of the exercises are fun, and all of them increase your heart rate or muscle tone while helping develop core muscle groups that aid in balance and posture. By using the system for whole group instruction, it would increase the number of minutes all students are physically active during class.
