Since returning to the building I am trying to engage my students as much as possible. I am challenging them to be great learners. In the classroom getting to know one another and refining their social skills is key. I am creating a classroom environment that is encouraging discussion based from analyzing and assessing our content (MC.SS.6-8.EUSH.23 & C.SS.9-12.US.35) We talk a lot about hard topics in history Slavery, discrimination, oppression, and genocide. The children need to feel safe in this environment to share. Everything counts, from the lighting to the air quality to the floor being clean. There was a child who coughed, not only did people around him feel awkward but he himself felt shamed by it. I took time out of my lesson to manage that situation but there are adults who have the same reaction. Kids are telling me that school life feels chaotic. The posters are great reminders of positive thinking, and also the mind set behind being your best. I'm using the rest of the posters as a timeline of all units we go over in the class. The Air purifier is for the students to feel safer around their classmates. Better air quality and clean floors lead to better learning. The light cover and lights are for setting an ideal learning atmosphere. I want to see what's possible in the children's learning when I give them a safe place to grow as individuals and as a team with their classmates. By encouraging them to work together daily it helps for us to be able to have the hard discussions. My history classroom is a place where kids can be themselves, discuss history, and work together to grow. Standards: MC.SS.6-8.EUSH.23 & C.SS.9-12.US.35
