My students are predominantly African American, living in Baltimore City. I have a particularly strong relationship with these incredible 8th graders because I have had the privilege of teaching them for the past 2 and a half years. Our school is somewhat unique. It is a 6th through 12th school, in which teacher teams loop with their students throughout middle school. Because of our time together, our students have seen significant growth in reading levels and in critical thinking and processing skills. They love a challenge and most have become avid readers. While their progress is extraordinary, most still struggle with family, neighborhood, and financial conflicts. We hope to instill in them that they are in control of their futures and that education is the key to their success.
