My students are amazingly talented and smart. They are writing books, creating art, and making videos. They are all on the autism spectrum and they are working hard to prepare for a future of independence. But there are many challenges facing them. They do not always fit in with their neuro-typical peers. And they do not always succeed in classes that are designed for neuro-typical teens. My job is to think outside the box, to utilize their strengths and passions, to show them that with some creative thinking, there is always a way to succeed. Once students see that they can be successful with on-line learning, they are willing and eager. But this requires lap-tops. And as more students start using the on-line resources, some students are blocked due to lack of computers. We need laptops for students to be successful in high school, and lay the groundwork for future success after high school.
