My students attend public school in California, in a major urban area where the haves and have-nots live closely together. California is one of the lowest funded schools per student in the country. We have experienced deep cuts. Each year we lose another staff position and program. The cost-of-living has greatly increased over the past seven years forcing many families and staff out of the area. Some students come from homes where there may not even be a pencil. Students often live with multiple family members in one small space. Our district is struggling financially. We are unable purchase new school furniture, leveled reading books and art materials. Teachers have less money to buy things for our classrooms. Without Donors Choose, we would have very few books, science materials, art and the tech tools that help our students thrive and succeed.
