The purpose of the project is to provide a Parents As Teachers Group Connection emphasizing the importance of block play while allowing parents and children a fun opportunity to play together, build critical skills & great memories. NAEYC reports skills learned from block play include: Problem-solving, imagination, self-expression, mathematics, continuity/permanence, creativity, science, self-esteem, social-emotional growth, and development in all areas. The project will provide avenues to build connections in 4 areas: o Building connections…in little developing brains o Building connections…of parent child relationships (Parents are their Child’s first and foremost teachers) o Building connections….between parents and families as a support network o Building connections…between home and school Parents will have an opportunity to observe their child’s development as they create with age appropriate Lego blocks. This provides opportunities to practice parenting behaviors emphasized during home visits. Children will engage in age appropriate block play, building connections in the brain, fine motor skills, social emotional skills, communication skills, and mathematical thinking. Parents as teachers helps parents understand child development, supports children’s learning, connects families with needed resources, and empowers parents to make the best choices for their families-all of which help children be better prepared upon entering the formal school environment. These strategies align with protective factors in the Strengthening Families Approach. These protective factors can provide a buffer around the family by increasing family strengths, enhancing child development, and reducing child abuse and neglect. There will be a brief presentation on the importance of block play (baseline questionnaire, short video clips, group discussion). Families then break into groups to find age appropriate blocks and spend time creating. Refreshments will be shared, door prizes given, and a free book for all children. Following the group connection, materials will be donated to local early childhood special education classrooms and a pre-k classroom.
