Although my students have tremendous academic potential, they reside in a low socioeconomic status community, and are faced with the educational challenges which result from poverty. We are a Title I school – 97% of our students qualify for free lunch. There is a high percentage of English language learners. Even though we have made significant gains on the CST, we continue to be identified as a Program Improvement School, primarily due to the low standardized test scores of our English language learners. My third grade students range from children with learning disabilities to the academically gifted, and are all enrolled in a single Structured English Immersion class. Due to budget cuts, my students are missing out on the Visual and Performing Arts experiences. They will learn science concepts through the use of music. Music inspires imagination!
