Students have undoubtedly had one of the hardest starts to their education than ever before. Being sent home during their kindergarten year due to COVID-19, my 2nd graders are essentially starting over when it comes to what it means to be at school. Many are struggling socially and emotionally, as per expected. But unfortunately many are having a hard time with their handwriting as they lost all of that essential fine motor skill practice offered in kindergarten. Now that my students are in 2nd grade, they are expected to have already mastered handwriting so that they can now focus on content knowledge. Being online for over a year has completely disrupted the natural progression of their handwriting neatness, as I have many still mirroring letters and numbers frequently and/or using capital and lowercase letters inconsistently. These booklets would allow students to practice with their handwriting as a part of their daily routine. I plan to incorporate doing a page or two for morning work daily in the hopes to see improvement.
