All kindergarten students like to touch things and learn by using their various senses. Sensory items can help students relax, focus, and calm down during certain events throughout the day. Sensory toys are appealing and can help students learn. Students can also play interactively promoting social skills such as sharing, turn-taking, and decision making. Sensory toys stimulate senses and are appealing to all students including those with special needs. Sensory play allows children to play, explore, and investigate while focusing on touch, increasing concentration, and developing fine motor skills and language skills. A water table in a kindergarten classroom would provide many opportunities for students to learn and grow and help them to succeed academically and socially. In my classroom, I would fill the sensory table with different items throughout the year. Some items I would use are beans, water beads, water, white rice, colored rice, small pumpkins, shaving cream, and beads. I would try to place seasonal items in the table as appropriate such as pumpkins at Thanksgiving, plastic eggs at Easter, or pine cones during winter. A sensory table would provide my kindergarten classroom with a wonderful new experience to learn and grow!
