The copies of these timeless texts will be used in multiple freshman and sophomore English classes. In addition to the reading of these texts, students will write a variety of shorter and longer pieces discussing their journey through the plays. The "No Fear Shakespeare" series takes the original language of William Shakespeare and simplifies it into modern day language that is more easily understood by the students. Due to the fact that Shakespeare's language is so powerful, the series also includes the plays how they were written and intended to be read. This allows the students to not only see the progression of language over time, but to also grasp the themes which are relevant in their lives currently as well as in the future. Learning to appreciate literature such as the works of William Shakespeare is essential for students in this foundational level of their education. If we are able to teach students to be active readers, critical thinkers and effective writers in this early educational period, we are setting them up for success in the additional years to come. The standards that are addressed in this unit are as follows: RL.9-10.2 - Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text. W.9-10.2 - Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content. During the pandemic, students have spent a great deal of time away from the classroom thus creating an assortment of learning gaps. These texts and the unit they are tied to will help to address and mend those gaps.
