Life Skills, Independent Living and Home Economics have been missing from our curriculum for several years. I asked if I could teach the class this year with the intention of working with 11/12 graders. With our very limited teachers, space and ability to move the schedule around due to shared classrooms, the class ended up being for 9/10 graders and they have really soaked it up. Our Home Ec room hasn't had any appliance updates in 20+ years and one of the ovens is a third hand donation. The over door doesn't shut completely and the elements on the stovetop are barely functional, so when the class attempted to bake cookies while creating grilled cheese and soup for lunch, it didn't go well. There is one other oven in the room, but with multiple students, one is not nearly enough to teach effectively.
