The COVID pandemic has affected students in all grades, however students with Autism (ASD) are particularly impacted in negative ways. Students with ASD thrive on routines. Students without consistent routines result in increased anxiety at school. Seeing my students calm and able to be in control of themselves is priceless. Students in my class often show signs of anxiety by crying, screaming, running out of the room and throwing objects, having a variety of ways to help them calm down is crucial. Each student with Autism is unique and finding that special item or items to help calm them down is important. Having a variety of options for my students is vital as what works for one student may not work for others.
