Students are craving community and opportunities to share their perspectives and experiences in the wake of months of isolation due to the pandemic. Podcasting is one authentic way in which we attempt to make writing more authentic. In this unit, students analyze and evaluate professional podcasts before creating an original podcast episode. Throughout the team, we constantly question: How can voice be used as a tool for communication? Last spring, my students published podcasts for the first time using Anchor; however, the audio logistics proved to be more challenging than the writing and development of the content. The built-in microphones on their Chromebooks proved to negatively impact the overall quality and how their voices could effectively communicate ideas and news. Through experience and research within the podcast community, it quickly became evident that a good microphone is fundamental for overall success. One microphone that was recommended across multiple sites is the Blue snowball USB condenser microphone. This one seems user-friendly for novice podcasters and is compatible with a range of devices. Your support will enable students to produce a professional-quality podcast and give voice to their ideas.
