John Lewis' graphic novel, March, will serve as an exploration of American Civil Rights movement. This text will be paired with James Baldwin's Sonny's Blues and essays from Malcolm X to analyze how American civil rights leaders create, shape, and maintain change in America's history. This unit will focus on synthesis writing and analyzing literary voices from a time in history speaking out for change. From Lewis' graphic novel, we will discuss theme and analyze in detail the novel's development, including its relationship with both Baldwin's work and Malcom X (CCSS ELA RL.9-10.2).
