These books will increase students' interest in reading and their ability to find books that they can relate to. Most of my students (about 75%) have reading levels that are one to three grade levels below their actual grade level. Students are reading independently in class at least twice per week, but many are struggling to find books that they are interested in or books that they can relate to within the classroom library. Independent reading has been shown to not only increase reading ability and vocabulary, but also to encourage critical thinking and engagement within the classroom. When students have diverse books that they can relate to on a variety of spectrums, they become more interested and engaged in reading. This benefits them both educationally and emotionally.
