STEAM materials will make a difference in my kindergarten students' learning. Students are taught the alphabet, their numbers, how to write the alphabet and numbers, and other fact-based information to memorize. Problem-solving skills are not an element of their daily learning experiences. Problem-solving skills, the ability to identify a problem, think of solutions, try those solutions, be okay with failure, and try again, are not part of the curriculum. I want my kinders to think out of the box, to take risks, and be okay with missteps and failures. I want my kinders to develop from an "I can't do this" attitude to "I can't do this, yet" mindset. I want my kinders to persevere. These are skills that will provide a lifetime of benefit, academically and personally. My kinders are already at risk given their family's impoverishment and perceived lack of opportunity. I want my kinders to know, they can do and be anything.
