As many of us know, the bee population across the United States is declining! Many factors affect the demise of bees, and the effects of fewer bees in our country can jeopardize our food supply, as fewer bees mean more minor pollinators to pollinate the plants we rely on for fruit and nuts! To help save the bees, the 4th graders at my school are embarking on a project to design a pollinator garden somewhere on their school grounds to help maintain the bee population. Working as real botanists, my students learn about the structures and functions of plants, how to plant a garden, native bees, and native flower species, and researching the best locations for a garden. As part of this project, students will have to first work in groups to design a garden model after their research is complete. Using play-dough is one option my students can choose to visualize their garden. In the end, my students will present their designs to their school's leadership team, with the final decision being made and implemented within the school year.
