My students come from an area where they are exposed to Chromebooks at an early age, but do not actually experience a technology class until junior high. They enter the seventh grade able to create a basic document or presentation, but most do not have any experience with computers beyond those basic skills. They have never heard of coding and have no idea about the fact that all of the applications they interact with on a daily basis, mostly on their phones, are created using code. All too often, my students fail to understand the real-life applications of what we are learning in class. These Sphero Minis will allow students to see their codes come to life, which will enable me to foster a love of technology that will open up a world of possibilities for my students! One of the major skills my students learn is coding, which can be challenging for middle school students who have limited experience with technology. Students don't always understand how the coding they are learning can be applied outside of the learning platform we employ. In my classroom, this translates into lack of motivation and a negative impact on student achievement. Having a tangible output for the code they create would help students have a goal to work toward, thus increasing students' engagement and achievement.
