COVID-19 has caused the academic gap to widen among socio-economic classes. This is a target for districts across the country. We are quickly learning that there are additional challenges for our students. Social and emotional learning is critical to the success of schools. Many of our students are lacking the skills to navigate interpersonal relationships and overcome challenge. Sometimes it is as simple as learning how to express their wants and needs. These most basic needs are required before any intervention in academic achievement can be successful. Our students can grow in their social/emotional learning through music engagement. The instruments within this project will allow students to express themselves with sound and movement. Music helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. We learn to express ourselves in different ways. A student can describe their feelings through sound. There is no doubt that stress and anxiety are at an all-time high with this pandemic. I'm confident that my students will benefit from this project. Students will use the hand drums to center themselves by creating a rhythm. They will also use them as non verbal tools to explain the emotions they are feeling. The rain sticks will be used to soften anxiety and stress. The egg shakers, drums, and tambourines will be used to create patterns through movement and sound. All these things help center students and get them ready to learn! The Tibetan Singing Bowl will be used as both a visual and auditory timer for student transitions in the classroom. This procedure helps our students that struggle the most with difficult behaviors due to the uncertainty of transition. Thank you for supporting this project!
