My students deserve to read literature that reflects their lives and experiences. Coming back from a year of shuttered doors on our school, my students need highly engaging material, more than ever. My plan is to begin this unit with a brief process of teaching basic elements of poetry and lead the student into generating their own "where I'm from" poem. Then we will begin the novel, performing characterization dissections and comparing the differences between the motifs that run through each character's story with the overall themes of the text as a whole. Ultimately, I want to lead my students in generating a project that would potentially lead to a service-learning component, supporting the middle school students of our school (we're 6-12) in their learning. My students need two things: classes that challenge them and the ability to see themselves in the challenge. By thoroughly diving into this text, I believe they can do both. I think they can wake in themselves the academics they only dream of being, and ignite that same passion in others as well.
