For our unit on matter, students are beginning to work on their collaborative unit project. Every one of my classes is split into 6 groups. The project centers on one question: Why does healthy air matter? In order for students to answer this question, it is necessary for them to know the quality of the air around them, both indoors and outdoors. I chose this air quality as a topic because of its cultural relevance to my students. To provide some context, our school is located in an area that is surrounded by busy streets, factories, and highways. This project will also allow students to touch on environmental racism, being that low-income communities of color tend to be exposed most to poor air quality. This project will help students engage with science in a meaningful and empowering way. With the air quality monitors, each group of students will be able to determine and, eventually, create graphs tracking the amount of particulate matter in the air. Particulate matter, especially that which measures 2.5 microns or less, is especially harmful to human health because matter this small can make it into our lungs and settle there. Over time, this can lead to heart and lung problems. Students will also be able to measure and track the amount of formaldehyde and VOC (volatile organic compounds) as well. Lastly, having an air purifier in our classroom will help us be able to calibrate the air quality monitors by providing us with a reliable baseline reading as well as ridding the air of any harmful particles that may be present. Additionally, an air purifier, along with proper mask use and social distancing, will help reduce the risk of airborne transmission of COVID-19 in a community that has been deeply impacted by the
