As a Title I teacher, I have students of all ages and reading levels enter my room each day. The books students see when they enter my room should reflect who they are, which is mostly Hispanic and Latino students. My students who are Black, Asian, Native American and White also deserve this right. Many of my students come from high levels of poverty and need books that will teach them how to cope with intense emotions. I teach at a Bilingual school with almost all students labeled as Language Learners. Seeing text that reflects this need will help students feel safe and welcomed as readers.
