My classroom library needs to be updated to meet the needs of my students. Most of my students are not reading on grade level. 10 of my students have IEP plans for reading. Even though reading is a struggle for them, they still want to read! My classroom library consists mainly of 4th and 5th-grade level books, which are too high for the majority of my students. Reading a book that is too challenging could potentially discourage them from checking out books from my classroom library. This class needs as much independent reading practice that they can get. I have been encouraging them to read during their spare time at school and to also read at home. They cannot do that though if they do not have an appropriate level book. I want books in my library that are at an appropriate level, but still appealing to 5th graders. 5th-grade students want to check out chapter books. I have chosen sets of books that are short chapter books, that are on a lower level than 5th grade. My classroom library is also outdated and this helps make my library more appealing to students.
