As children pretend to cook dinner in the Super Chef Kitchen, grow vegetables in the Raised Garden, and buy groceries with the Real-Working Cash Register, they learn practical communication skills (What would you like for dinner?), problem-solving skills (How much rain does the corn need?), and new vocabulary words (menu, recipe, ingredients). Dramatic play integrates learning from language arts, math, science, and social studies as students engage in relevant, meaningful activities with real-life connections. Authentic dramatic play encourages students to practice language skills and cultivate a rich vocabulary -- key concepts for learning to read and write. Unlike traditional play centers that may be unstructured time, dramatic play is carefully planned by teachers to provide a language-rich environment and feature scripted scenarios, interaction with peers, and opportunities for students to practice their new communication skills at school and home.
