It's the beginning of the year so it's time for diagnostic district testing and state testing. Testing requires a lot of mental perseverance. No matter what period of the day. If a student's basic needs are not met, it is difficult to perform. Many students come to school/class without a full belly. Mints and gum can be handed out, but they don't address the real hunger. An 8th grader asked me for a snack the other day because he hadn't eaten dinner and missed breakfast at school that morning. Four teachers pooled their snack/food resources to help his growling stomach. These materials will help nourish students and encourage them to do their best on whatever task they have at hand! Fuel to help students comes in both solid and liquid forms. Snack bags, like Cheez-Its and Goldfish, and granola bars, will help satisfy the need. Water and different juices will help quench thirst. Students build confidence in themselves when they see improvement. Testing can be a great way to showcase their understanding as they see their own test data increase. Standardized tests cannot measure everything. When students are hungry to learn, not hungry, they will succeed!
