In our floral design class, we will be making fall floral arrangements to demonstrate the principles of floral design. Our class budget and the students' class fees go towards the cost of flowers, which get to be very expensive. This leaves very little funds left for purchasing containers to put the arrangements in. In the past, students have had to bring real pumpkins as a container for their flowers, which only last about a week before they start molding and falling apart. Pumpkins give off ethylene gas which speeds up the wilting of flowers, resulting in the flowers not lasting as long. I had wanted to buy ceramic pumpkin containers through our floral wholesaler, but could not find any on Amazon. Instead I found these wooden boxes which are the perfect size. The rustic wood planter boxes would allow students in the Floral Design class to make floral arrangements that will last longer and the boxes are versatile and can be used frequently throughout the year. These boxes are a better option because they are a more consistent size and I can use them at different times in the year as I will have this class again in the spring, when pumpkins are not in season. Students can make arrangements in the boxes to decorate tables for holidays, banquets, fundraiser meals, senior living facilities, or a school open house. The students will return their boxes after their flowers have died, that way I can keep the boxes for other classes in the future. As we navigate this pandemic, we are fortunate to be in person teaching at school. If we needed to change our learning model to being remote, this would give us enough supplies for students for consistent materials towards their success.
