My students explore the concept of coming of age and self-identity through, reading, writing, and group work. Having the confidence to express one's feelings requires practice and an environment that is safe and welcoming to the student. High school can be a very stressful time for many students, especially in their freshman year, as many students are adjusting to their new environment. I do my best to create a welcoming environment for my students. I use daily journals to help the students write about their feelings. Students volunteer to share their journal entries with the class. Journal sharing helps the students learn more about one another, builds a culture of respect by providing every student with a voice, and initiates discussions on coming-of-age topics. The students also read a variety of texts that explores the coming-of-age theme. Fluorescent light covers will provide a welcoming and stress-free environment that is conducive to learning. Fluorescent lights make it difficult for the students to concentrate and focus. Reading and writing under fluorescent lights can also increase bodily stress and negative classroom performance. Fluorescent light covers will allow my students to focus on their reading, writing, and group work and provide a safe environment as they explore their identity and their journey as they come of age.
