One of my missions as a 10th grade teacher is to reconnect my students to the world around them through engaging, science based projects. Coming from an urban area many of my students have never seen the lifecycle of a butterfly. Growing butterflies will allow my students to have a never before seen view of nature in action! This project will allow my students to have a hands on experience that will be new to most of them! Students will be able to take charge of a project from beginning to end, giving them a sense of accomplishment and pride. These materials will be used for in class learning. Students will work in groups to grow, care for, and release their butterflies. Having the opportunity to grow butterflies will also reinforce lessons on life cycles, trophic levels, heredity, and native species.
