During such a trying time for us all, as the Multi-Tiered Support Specialist, I wanted to try developing a calming space that would suit the needs of dedicated teachers and students (Social Emotional Well-being). I wanted the calming room to assist and provide support for the social and emotional needs of MMS; allowing teachers also a space for them to have for themselves when they become overwhelmed. The purpose of Maverick’s Space calming room is to give our students and teachers a safe space to decompress feelings of anxiety, depression, and anger, earn SEL skills, and much more. Secondly, the Maverick Space calming room would assist with helping students regulate their emotions. When stress and anxiety rise, we all struggle to make excellent choices. We struggle in having productive conversations, and we lose focus on the tasks that lie in front of us. The goal of Maverick’s Space should be to reduce negative sensory input and provide calming visual, auditory, and tactile experiences to help students destress. The room should be used to help students de-escalate and emotionally reset. Even if we don’t have the space for an entire room, we can still find creative ways to accomplish this goal. Think about turning an empty refrigerator box into a calming reading cave, or find other creative ways to make a space for students to decompress.
