My ninth graders have read George Orwell's Animal Farm for years. This summer, I was told by a former student to read In Order to Live because it would be such a cool book to read along with Orwell. I couldn't agree more. This book puts Orwell's ideas of nationalism, dictatorship, and abuse of power in a real-life memoir. North Korea is a country they hear about in the news. It's a country they can't understand. The connection to their lives seems impossible. However, reading this woman's story makes so many of those connections possible.
