Carpet time is essential for early elementary education. We use our carpet space to conduct morning meeting, to do read-alouds, and to model new concepts in math. Younger students are able to focus more intently when they receive instruction on the carpet, in close proximity to their teacher, rather than at their individual tables. The carpet also provides a space for social-emotional learning as students participate in circle time and learn to respect each others' personal space when sitting in close proximity. To help my students focus in the classroom and maintain personal space, I would like to have a carpet in my room that has designated sit-spots for each child. As a temporary solution, I have been taping out boxes on the floor to show students where to sit. The tape is distracting, unsightly, and a pain to re-tape every few days. I would love to have a comfy carpet for students to sit on instead. I have chosen a carpet with neutral colors that I feel will promote calmness and focus during carpet time. The circle design on the carpet will show each student where they should sit and provide a visual aid for how to maintain personal space. I have also added a set of carpet markers to show students where they should stand in line. Similar to needing their own space on the carpet, students need to know where they should stand when lining up at the door. I would like to replace my taped-down spots with more durable carpet markers to give each student a place to stand while waiting to enter the hallway.
