This drone will give students the ability to pursue a variety of goals. Aviation, photography, digital editing, topography, and community service to name a few. The drone club at our school has been approved and has started. We teach students how to use drones legally and to advance their professional careers. Since drones can be expensive, this drone can be a pathway for students to learn hands on. Through the drone club, I give them course work to study in class and at home so that they can become legally certified to fly drones recreationally and professionally. This drone is a pathway to train and encourage students vocationally and academically. The drone will also be used to enhance the reach of STEM learning from our school. Science, I have been in communication with science teachers to perform drone flights where sensors are attached and different elevations can be studied. Technology, the camera, robotics, and transmission from the remote to the drone are all evolving and will be studied. Engineering, the encompassing ability of a drone to analyze structures and contribute to architecture research. Mathematics, the sky’s the limit, as a mathematics teacher, I plan to start to integrate aviation technology and theory into at least one lesson per unit we study. Let’s bring our subjects to life with real world applications using the context of aviation. Other non-STEM subjects will also benefit. We can use it to contribute to our yearbook. We can use it for presentations at our school and other neighboring schools. Parts of the drone certification that students will study include weather, airplane design, geography, and government, just to name a few. As a certified professional drone pilot, I want to offer my love of aviation and math to my students through drones.
