Ukuleles are highly accessible instruments for students as young as 3rd grade to learn concepts such as melody, harmony, and rhythm in a way that is culturally relevant and highly enjoyable in both group and individual settings. They are also a wonderful alternative to wind instruments such as recorders, and would help to mitigate the risks of COVID. Ukuleles foster a lifelong love of music in students that transcends the walls of the music classroom. These instruments are affordable, easy to learn, and can be used to play a wide variety of music, including the music that my students enjoy listening to on their own time. As a music teacher, my goal is to provide all of my students with the tools they need to make music for pleasure for the rest of their lives. The versatility and accessibility of the ukulele allows students to do just that in a way that no other instrument can. Any contribution no matter the amount would be greatly appreciated by both me and my wonderful students for years to come.
