I teach middle school science to grades six through eight, and also run occasional demonstrations or labs for the elementary students in kindergarten through fifth grades. At the beginning of the year, our lessons focus on the scientific inquiry process as well as lab safety. We learn about asking good questions, testing hypotheses, and interpreting results. Just as importantly, we learn about how to stay safe in the science class, with protective equipment including such items as eyewear, gloves, or lab coats, depending on the activity. With this project, we will be protecting our scholars with lab coats for immersive, in-depth scientific exploration. In addition, these lab coats will help our scholars see themselves as scientists and scientific thinkers. When students feel represented and feel that they CAN be successful scientists, they take a sense of pride and ownership in their work, and this deepens their learning. I have requested a variety of sizes to accommodate all learners.
