My school went to block scheduling this year. Students are in my reading class for 80 minutes a day. It is very difficult for most 11 and 12-year-olds to maintain focus for that length of time; they tend to get restless and lose focus. Research shows that allowing students to "fidget" or physically move while learning helps to release anxiety, energy, and frustration. The elastic bands tied to the students' desks will provide them with a way to channel their energy without being disruptive while maximizing the learning experience. Other students are more introverted and have a more relaxed learning style. Any movement or sound disrupts their concentration and frustration sets in. I have found that allowing those students to wear headphones during class provides them with a sense of isolation they need. These types of headphones are perfect for blocking out the subtle sounds in the classroom; yet, allowing students to hear my instructions.
