Due to the diversity in my classes, I have students from all different backgrounds, ages (9th-12th grade), and ability levels learning in the same room. I teach skills that can be basic or challenging at the same time, so that each student can learn on a level appropriate for them. Choosing a life skill like sewing gives my students an even more meaningful experience in the art room as they can use that skill long after high school, and as a career if necessary. With sewing, students can learn math and measuring skills, basic clothing repair, fashing design, crafts, etc. The door is wide open. However, the reason I choose to introduce it to my students is because, sewing adds to career readiness while giving students a creative outlet in their art class.
