1st grade is a crucial and challenging year for students - for many, it's the year they really learn to read, add and subtract, and it is the foundation for all the more complex skills they will gain in the later elementary years. For this year's 1st graders, it is going to be even more challenging because of the disruptions to their kindergarten learning caused by the pandemic. Students are going to need to catch up on what they might have missed in kinder AND make those huge 1st grade leaps in their skills. To do this, we need to accelerate their learning and make every hour of every day as focused as possible, starting on the very first day of school. Keeping 6-year-olds focused all day is always a challenge, especially early and late in the school year when the weather is hot. In my classroom it gets up into the 80s by the afternoon and my already squirmy 1st graders totally lose focus. This year I anticipate this being even more of an issue because we will also be sweating under our face masks and my students will have less stamina because they spent most or all of last year in remote learning. This year, the students really can't afford to lose focus in these early weeks of school. With this A/C unit keeping our classroom cool and comfortable, students will be able to focus all day no matter how hot it gets outside so they can hit the ground running as they begin to catch up on and accelerate their learning.
