As 7th grade scientists, scholars really struggle to see the value of science when they aren't able to bring those skills to life. During the second quarter, the students will be beginning their life science unit which focuses on the different body systems (muscular system, reproductive system, nervous system, skeletal system, etc). In order to garner more student engagement, I want to give them an opportunity to visually see the skills that we have been talking about in class. This opportunity will be helpful for my students because fetal pigs are mammals like humans which means many of their major structures are very similar anatomically. Fetal pigs' directions are helpful because the size of the organ makes them easy to find and identify. Dissections are hands-on and investigatory and this will allow my students to test the "truthfulness" of what they see in books. This dissection will be an opportunity to impress the students about what is present in the natural world. No two fetal pigs will look exactly the same although they look normal. The will help develop students' observational skills.
